Scalp micropigmentation, side effects

What will I read in this article about scalp micropigmentation, side effects?

Macrodots, allergic reactions, points that turn to green or blue, infections and swollen lymph nodes.

No, it’s not a nightmare but some of scalp micropigmentation side effects, or rather of bad scalp micropigmentation.

Every treatment has its pros and cons. In the absence of expertise and specific tools, scalp micropigmentation can cause damage and worsen discomfort in those suffering from hair loss.

Let’s see together what the possible side effects of smp are and what they are caused by.

Most treatments performed on the body carry risks. When scalp micropigmentation is performed by an experienced and qualified artist, with advanced tools and techniques, in the absence of pathological contraindications, has no serious side effects.

If one of these conditions fails, scalp micropigmentation can have temporary or quite serious side effects.

Among most serious side effects there are:

  • Allergies.  In the same way that some people have allergic reactions to tattoo ink, it is possible to react the colorants used during the smp treatment. If  the smp artist uses a low quality ink, it could contain heavy metals, which are dangerous for people with a very sensitive skin. Also sterile equipment and fragrances sprayed during the procedure can cause an allergic reaction.
  • Swelling of the lymph nodes. The lymph nodes swell in reaction to an infection that may be caused by unsterile needles, inadequate hygiene measures or the use of contaminated pigments. The smp artist has to use a clean and new needle for every patient. Safety measures are very important to protect the patients from unnecessary risks and the scalp micropigmentation artist from a bad reputation.
  • Dots turn blue or green. This happens when scalp micropigmentation artists use tattoo inks. The ink is mistakenly injected too deeply and the immune system reacted, causing the ink to break down into its usual components. That is why the color turns blue or green.
  • Permanent scars. Among the most serious side effects are permanent scars due mainly to the lack of dexterity and preparation of the smp artist. If the hand tilt and pressure used during treatment are incorrect, the risk of leaving permanent scars on the patient’s scalp is high.

There are also some annoying but temporary side effects, as:

  • Loss of sensation. Some people who have had the treatment experience a loss of sensation in the scalp. The sensation is similar to a burn. Generally this happens to people who have more delicate and sensitive skin.
  • Itchy scalp. Generally, after a couple of days after treatment, an itchy scalp may appear. This is a temporary side effect due to the natural healing process: each micro wound heals and the skin exfoliates.
  • Redness. Another potential side effect of scalp micropigmentation is redness around the treated area. This can usually be resolved with ice. It’s important that the smp artist avoids any physical trauma to the scalp. If the needle tip is pressed too hard into the scalp, excessive bruising may occur.

In cases where these temporary side effects occur, the experienced scalp micropigmnetation artist will best advise the patient for faster healing.

Bad scalp micropigmentation. What are the causes?

For all women who have shoulder length hair and lose hair volume, or for men with hair thinning, scalp micropigmentation would be a perfect opportunity to add density to their hair, that will look thicker and fuller.

Men, who pick out smp for hair density, can choose among a mullet, buzz or crew cut without giving up their style. Like that women can keep their hair long.

So, the perfect clients for scalp micropigmentation hair density are:

  • All persons who suffer alopecia areata.
  • Men with hair thinning out.
  • Women with female pattern baldness and diffused hair thinning.

How to prevent scalp micropigmentation problems

What does the success or failure of a scalp micropigmentation treatment depend on? Side effects can occur, but sometimes the problem is the wrong technique, low-quality pigments, or an unsterile environment and instruments.

It is important to study, train, and continually update. Take care of the environment in which you work.

Listen to the history and needs of one’s patients. Choose high-performance and high-quality tools (needles, dermographs, pigments).

Side effects of SMP are extremely rare. If you have doubts about the reaction the patient’s scalp may have to the ink, you can test a small amount on a less visible section of the scalp before starting treatment. The patient must feel comfortable. It is the smp artist’s duty to reassure him or her.

To achieve the best result with a safe smp

The most important thing to achieve the most natural-looking results is experience (the right pressure with which to insert the needle, the angle of the hand, and the dilution of the pigment take time and lots of practice).
As a smp artist you know that scalp micropigmentation requires advanced technical skills and experience, but also specific tools (needles and pigments).
Assuming that the artist’s preparation is beyond reproach, obtaining a good result depends largely on the type of pigment used.

The best inks for scalp micropigmentation are hypoallergenic, biocompatible, scalp-specific and above all stable.

What does it mean that the color is stable?

The color will not turn blue or green over time, nor will it tend to enlarge from the injection site.
